What are hardsubs?
Hardsubs are subs which are hard-coded into
AVI video containers. You also can say that
the hardsubs are part of the video itself.
You cannot switch between languages and for
watching them only a player with the codec
for playing the video is needed. What are softsubs?
Softsubs are simply files (ass, ssa, srt, txt)
whose format depends on the exact subtitle
encoding software to be used to interpret
these. Softsubs are not part of the video like
hardsubs. The MKV container makes it possible
to put as many subtitle formats into it as you
want and after the encoding stuff is done you
can switch between the subtitle files you have
inserted. To play Softsubs you need the vsfilter,
the codec for mkvs and Media Player Classic. What are the positive aspects of the MKV format?
- the output format is smaller than the original one
- you can make chapters
- you can put as many subtitle formats in it as you want
- official support of:
- Video: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, RealVideo, WMV
- Audio: AAC, WAV, MP3 (CBR und VBR), Vorbis etc
- menus support
- more than only one audio stream
How to play softsubs?
Programs which are needed: vsfilter, the
player which is needed is Media Player
Classic (in most cases this player is already
installed in the directory
c:\programs\windowsmediaplayer). Videolan
(VLC media player) DOESN'T suppor softsubs.
And last but not least the thing which gets
ignored very much: you need the CODEC. I
know that a lot of people are complaining
that their computer cannot play certain
audio or video formats. Guys your computer
can only do what you are teaching him.
I won't answer on any question concerning
the video doesn't play. It's your job to
check which codecs you have I don't have
any list laying around here where stands
which codecs you miss or which you have...
I only want to say that my way of helping
you when something isn't working is very
narrowed ....when such problems appear it
is for 99,9% a codec problem...for vobsub and vsfilter: http://www.divx-digest.com/
software/vobsub.html
for codec packs: http://www.filehippo.com/
download_klite_codec_pack/?1794
(as I said I cannot tell you which codec pack you need since I dunno what codecs you have and which you don't have. For ones without any advanced codecs i would say version 2.71 is good but I wouldn't lay my fingers into the fire) in most cases media player classic is already included in the codec packs!!!!
When you have everything which is required now we go to install everything:
(Install the codec first when you haven't this one... )
Install vsfilter, if you cannot open it via right-click and release... copy the file (*.dll) into following directory c:\windows\system32. please take the filter from the site i have given you. (scroll down for the ones who not find it) you have two folders in the archive. copy the UNICODE filter! After you have copied the filter
go on start --> run. enter this into the box regsvr32 VSfilter.dll. Click OK then. After you have mastered the step and everything worked fine a window should pop up that VSfilter.dll is running!
When you have everything done properly you should be able to watch the mkvs on mediaplayerclassic! another point is that a green arrow should appear when opening a file with softsubs...
IMPORTANT: Only because you were able to play subbed anime files it doesn't have to mean you have vobsub or you would be able to play softsubs. ANIME WITH SUBS ARE VERY OFTEN HARDSUBS AND THIS DOESN'T REQUIRE ANY EXTRA PROGRAMS --> ONLY A PLAYER IS NEEDED!!! SEREI NO MORBITO IS ALSO HARDSUBBED...
when media player cassic also says that you are not able to play the file but you are able to play it on VLC player... it doesn't mean very much since always certain format codecs are integrated in the player. Therefore VLC player isn't able to recognize/ show the subtitles in a good quality. the later versions of media player classic should be able to play mkvs without installing any extra codec. Media player was developed by GABEST...it's the same developer who is responsible for vobsub so it doesn't irritade why it can recognize media player classic and its actions. VLC Player has only a good point for me because it can play incomplete torrent files...nothing more
What program do I have to use to extract the files?
You can choose between 7-Zip and HJSplit.
7-Zip: http://www.7-zip.org/
HJSplit: http://hjsplit.softonic.de/
How do I extract the files?
1 install 7-Zip2 download all Parts of the video
3 go to the files in you explorer (all must be in one folder)
4 click right on the first file
5 something with '7-zip' or 'extract here' will appear, click 'extract here' (if it just shows '7-zip' move with your mouse over thatand then 'click extract' here)
6 7-zip will do the work
8 enjoy the video
The internet site does not work properly or looks strange!
The site was designed to work on Mozilla Firefox 2 or newer and Internet Explorer 7 or newer. However I can not guaranty it will work with any other version; For instance Internet Explorer 6 is not able interpret the used transparent png-pictures what means they will not be properly shown. Please also note that displays with solutions under 1024x768 might have problems with the site, too.If you have any problems you think are not caused by your browser or display solution, for example broken links, please let me know here.
